Agree with you exactly and have felt this way for a long time. At some point over the last 40+ years the state of Israel became a political entity, not a religion.and needs to be judged as such. Back in the 70s I always thought of Zionism as a very secular movement. The equivalence as a Catholic (ex Irish Catholic/active agnostic) would be to insist that as such, I was required to side with the IRA against the English. Or, to require that the practice of Tai Chi require a stance on the issues between of Taiwan and Main Land China when one is deciding to practice the 24 form or not.

Wholly agree. We are not walking away from Israel; a long time ago Israel walked away from us. Israelis ignored our pleas and threw in their lot with Netanyahu and Trump. Tragically, they will have to face the consequences. We liberals cannot protect them.

Rabbi Rami,

Your directness and bravery in speaking to diasporic Jews about divorcing our identities from that of the theocracy of Israel, is powerful and persuasive. However, isn't it our ethical responsibility as Jews to always fight for justice for the dispossessed, the "stranger", the unjustly targeted-- whether they are Palestinian or Uyghur?

Thank you!!! I used to feel so guilty when I disliked Israeli politics. 'We finally got a home, support it'. No more guilt. I don't like Israel politics, Bibi, the ultra orthodox etc. I no longer care to live in Israel. America has its flaws but I'm staying put. Anti semitism is everywhere but I'd rather live in the USA and yes, I clap when a plane I'm on hits the US ground. Let Israel sort its own mess out!

And because as an American & a Jew I know my country’s discrimination of our Native American people, underserved who live in poverty & homeless, those more likely to be incarcerated for the color of their skin, refusal to be a bi-lingual country, health care unavailable to all etc etc etc and will not judge others just want better for all and YES, “they” & “them” - grouping people into binary groups only limits our complexities
